THE SENATE ELECTION IS HERE AGAIN!

Since her election to the senate in that 1995 contested election which she first lost, complained about phony irregularities, had former Chair Sandi Cooper write to President Goldstein and even got her to appeal to faculty in support of her candidacy, and finally won by a handful of votes, Professor Susan O'Malley has not been around the campus much. But now that her three-year term is up in the Senate, she has resurfaced again in the hallways and byways of KCC to urge you to vote for her. She has talked about writing letters to legislators and testifying before the Board and the City Council, as if you do not know that one does not have to be a Senator to meet with your legislators and testify before the City Council and the Board of Trustees.

POINTS TO PONDER ABOUT SUSAN O'MALLEY

POSITION ON OVERLOAD FOR FACULTY

      1) Authoritative sources have informed us that at a meeting of the Community College Caucus of the UFS Professor O'Malley spoke against overloads for the faculty. She is now asking us to vote for her in the Senate so she can again speak and act against the interests of the faculty.

BENEFITS OF HER REPRESENTATION FOR KCC FACULTY

      2) What exactly are the benefits that she has brought to members of the KCC faculty through more than twelve years of representation on the University Faculty Senate? As far as we know, absolutely nothing. As a matter of fact, because of her confrontational rhetoric, she has made enemies among the leadership and members of the Board of Trustees as well as officials at the chancellor's office who have been supportive of KCC.

      3) During the past twelve years of representation on the Senate, instead of resolving problems facing Kingsborough in particular and CUNY in general, we have seen an increase in issues facing the university, such as attacks on open admissions, unreasonable admission requirements, budget crisis, etc. Is it not logical then that Professor O'Malley's leadership is ineffective? Let someone else represent the KCC faculty.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR KEEPING FACULTY INFORMED

      4) Nothing has been done to keep us informed on Senate issues affecting KCC faculty. As far as we know the last undated KCC University Faculty Senate Newsletter came out in March 1995. Professor O'Malley also called a meeting of the faculty with KCC senators three years ago on March 7, 1995 (right before the election - interesting timing!) That was the last time we heard from her in terms of a Newsletter or a meeting.

      5) We have been informed that she leads a delegation of KCC senators to meet with the President twice a semester. She has never asked the faculty for their input on agenda. She has never informed the faculty of the outcome of issues discussed or debated at these meetings. Professor O'Malley uses faculty to get elected so she can get released time, but fails to fulfill her obligation to keep the faculty informed.

      6) In March of this year, she sent a memo to faculty informing them of the formation of the Kingsborough Concerned Faculty Forum. Since then for more than six months we have not heard a thing about this Forum. Does it still exist, or was it another of Professor O'Malley's gimmicks to show that she is doing something but in reality is doing nothing?

O'MALLEY'S LEISURELY LIFE OF RELEASED TIME

   7) How much released time has she received in the past, and how much released time does she currently get from the Senate? We are told that this year, the Queen of Released Time gets eight hours of released time. According to our information, in previous years she has raked in as much as nine to twelve hours of released time. This has been going on for twelve years. Despite our request under the Freedom of Information Act former Chair Sandi Cooper (a friend of the Queen of Released Time) failed to provide us with a correct and accurate account of released time given to Professor O'Malley.

    8) Professor O'Malley receives two hours of released time each semester for the UFS Newsletter, although 90% of the work was and is currently being performed by the UFS staff.

   9) We would like Professor O?Malley to enlighten us on the courses she claims to teach at the CCNY Center for Worker Education and at the Graduate Center. Which courses are those? How many students are enrolled in these courses? How often and how long the courses meet? Does she get paid for them or, does she get released time?

ABSENTEE SENATOR AND ON SABBATICAL

   10) Professor O'Malley is very busy with outside activities. She teaches at the Center for Worker Education and at the Graduate Center, she is an editor of the Radical Teacher, and now is going to go on a one year sabbatical. Over the years we hardly see her on the campus, with the exception of election time. With her sabbatical, we will never see her on campus. Why should we elect her to represent us when she is not going to be on campus most of the time? Why is she so interested in students at other colleges? When will she take an interest in Kingsborough? Or, is that beneath her dignity?

These "Tips" have been presented as a public service on behalf of that faculty that wish to spend a peaceful Thanksgiving without a telephone call from the Queen of Released Time.

   I promise I won't call.
