Vol. 13, No. 4                                                                                   November 29, 1999

AN EXPLANATION

The Patriot ( vol. 13, no. 2) made its endorsements based on the names listed in the November 12 memorandum issued by the Legislative Committee entitled "FINAL BALLOT." One would assume that this "final" list was prepared after the deadline for declining the nominations. However, Dr. Bernard Klein, Chair of the Legislative Committee conveyed to the editor of the Patriot on November 24, 1999 that Professor Bonne August of the English Department, one of the candidates endorsed by the Patriot, is not a candidate for election to the Senate. Although we are disappointed that Bonne is not running, we are now endorsing another candidate from that Department.

For three positions of Senator, vote for

SUSAN FARRELL: Associate Professor, Behavioral Sciences

B.A. Queens College; M. A. St. John's University; Ph. D. CUNY.

A well-respected scholar with a keen sense of commitment to students, Susan will bring new perspective to the Senate. Easy to talk to and down-to-earth, Susan has an extensive record of publication in the field of sociology.

CLIFF HESSE: Professor and Chairperson, Communications and Performing Arts

B.A., M.A., Brooklyn College; Ph.D., New York University.

A friend of all and enemy of none, this remarkable individual will focus his attention on the long-neglected issues of the career programs. In addition, with his media background, he can repackage the personalities and issues which come before the Senate to make them appeal and influence the public and to the decision-makers in CUNY. There is an urgent need to change the Senate's image as a conglomeration of 1960's radical groups who do nothing but grandstand, protest and demonstrate for causes that are irrelevant to issues that affect CUNY faculty.

EVA RICHTER: Assistant Professor

A.M., University of Chicago.

Eva is dedicated to the cause of providing educational opportunities for our poor, minority and immigrant students. She has impressed a number of her colleagues in the Senate with work on the resolving of educational issues confronting our university.

For two positions of Alternate Senator, vote for

MICHAEL BARNHART: Associate Professor, History

B.A. Haverford College; Ph. D., Temple University.

One of the new breed of scholars at KCC, Dr. Barnhart represents the best of young faculty at KCC. Committed to innovation in course offerings in History and Philosophy, Dr. Barnhart developed the timely course, "Ethics and Morality in Health Professions." It is expected that his voice in the Senate will bring rational discourse to a body known for its chaos and aimless debate.

JOHN P. LIN, Associate Professor, Student Development

B. A. Amherst College, M. Phil., Ph. D., Columbia University.

A solid member of the faculty for many years, John is liked and respected by all who know him. His dedication to the needs of students is beyond question. If elected, he will be an excellent voice on behalf of both teaching and non-teaching faculty. In his quiet and unassuming way, John is known to be effective in making changes where needed.

Voting: Monday, Nov. 29 and Tuesday, Nov.30 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Room U-213.

AN AFTERTHOUGHT:

One may attend all the meetings all the time,
But what good is it if the evidence shows
One didn't utter even a single word at these meetings.
