FACULTY, BE AWARE!

DON'T ALLOW YOUR FUTURE TO BE IN THE HANDS OF SUSAN O'MALLEY, THE QUEEN OF RELEASED TIME

On March 6, there came in an e-mail message from Laurence Simon ( Larry the Loner) and Susan O’Malley (the Queen of Released Time) to All Faculty announcing the meeting of the Kingsborough Faculty Assembly on March 13. Immediately thereafter the Patriot’s telephone began to ring.

People wanted to know what this is about and what advice the Patriot can give them in terms of their participation or non-participation in this matter. Following are some of our observations:

Be careful. Don’t get sucked into it. This is, most likely, yet another ploy by the Queen of Released Time to secure and guarantee herself additional released time.

A few years ago, a high official at the College told us that the Queen of Released is the astute planner of her released time. For almost a decade and even currently, she is a recipient of several hours of released time for being on the Executive Committee of the University Faculty Senate. She is also getting additional released time for supposedly editing the UFS's Newsletter. By running on the New Caucus slate, she got herself on their Executive Committee. We hear that she is pushing and most likely will receive some more released time. Not having a credibility on the campus, most likely she will not run for the next Senate election thus losing her released time in the future. Her efforts to form another slate for the upcoming PSC CUNY Chapter fizzled because no one wanted to run on her slate, thus losing any opportunity to receive released time for union activities on the campus. So now she is drumming up this new avenue.

She has named herself a Faculty Governance Leader. No one nominated her and no one has elected her to that position and no one knows what the Governance Leaders do. We believe that she perceives the so called Kingsborough Faculty Assembly as a vehicle for her self aggrandizement with great possibilities for her to acquire lots of released time in future.

Is it not a better idea that at our current College Council, the legally constituted body, with elected representatives from faculty, administration and students, scheduled to meet on March 20, someone brings in a motion to form a committee which will study, conduct hearings and recommend to the faculty to modify, revise, change, alter, abolish or invent new Council? If we are to change the College Council, it has to be done legally with proper deliberation and discussions of all issues to all concerned. It also has to be approved by the Board of Trustees. A body not authorized by the current College Council is illegitimate and should not be given a forum

THE FUZZY SLOGAN AND LARRY THE LONER

In this e-mail Larry the Loner writes: "We (Kingsborough Faculty Assembly) are the only voice on the campus that is by, for and of the faculty." Is he kidding or is he in a cyberspace? Even after more than two decades on the Kingsborough Campus with Full Professorship at his credit, he fails to understand that the local PSC Chapter has been voicing faculty concerns for decades. What is tragic is, as we understand it, he has been invited to serve on the Executive Committee of the local PSC chapter in the coming election and his name may appear on the ballot in the coming election. For him to call the nonexistent Faculty assembly as the only voice of the faculty is either pure stupidity or he is playing games with the local Chapter. Furthermore, no one has prevented him or any other person from bringing before the College Council which has to do with teaching or curriculum.

Larry also invites faculty to present "original scholarly works" before the Faculty Forum Can you imagine if any scholar would reveal his "original" research to a faculty body? She/he would rather publish it in a reputable scholarly journal and/ or disclose it before his professional organization before disclosing his "original" research to a faculty body.

OUR FUTURE HERE AT KCC IS TOO IMPORTANT TO BE MANIPULATED BY THE QUEEN OF RELEASED TIME'S GREED. PL. BE ON GUARD

PS Visit the KCC's Art Gallery, March 7-April 4. See "Morning Woods" by Lois Dodd. This oil on canvas 30x60 painting is exciting, exhilarating and yes, non-offensive realist. You don't have to scratch your head to figure out what it is.
